Community Involvement Helps HVFD

With Their Exterior Lights.

When the perimeter lights were first put up at the Henly VFD, their brightness was called to the attention of Cindy Luongo Cassidy with the International Dark-Sky Association by George Milner, a Henly resident, who asked if she could help with the situation.  Because of his long time association and friendship with Cindy and his love of Henly's dark night skies he was instrumental in helping the fire department make additions to their lighting to help control glare and also to put the lighting on the ground in the parking lot where it was most needed.

During the Henly Volunteer Fire Department's Bar-B-Q fundraiser last summer, Cindy presented the station with a set of six high quality light hoods to help reduce the lateral glare from the station's perimeter lights while putting the needed light where it would be the most effective, in the fire fighters' work area.

On the weekend of September 19th, Jim Kannen with the Friends of Henly and a neighbor, Dr. Gary Halm, invested quite a bit of sweat equity to install and adjust the hoods for best performance.

The photos tell the story, as will a drive by the station some pleasant Henly evening.

Gone is the glare that shone out over the country side and, by the way, into the eyes of the fire fighters as they pulled into the station.  Now the station's grounds are well lit with proper levels of brightness for our fire fighters to function efficiently when they get a call-out at night.

The Henly Volunteer Fire Department located in Henly, Texas is actually station #3 of the North Hays County Fire Rescue organization.  They protect 281 square miles of North Hays county from 6 fire stations. The safety of their firefighters, both career and volunteer, who use this station if of great importance. Improving their environment is a small thing compared to the sacrifices they make daily to protect our homes, lives, and property.

A huge thank you to Cindy Luongo Cassidy and the International Dark-Sky Association for the generous grant allowing them to provide the hoods and to George Milner who brought this situation to their attention.  Also kudos to the Henly Volunteer Fire Department for allowing us to install them.
